The storybook fills the gap between the original game and the new sequel: 'Follow Alice’s journey through Rutledge Asylum in all-new prequel story, crafted by the original writer of American McGee’s Alice.' Not only is the app free, but if you complete the storybook, you'll also receive a $10 coupon good toward the purchase of Alice: Madness Returns. This is a pretty good deal if you planned on picking up the game anyway. While the storybook app is currently only available to US customers using an iOS device (iPhone / iPad / iPod), they plan to roll out the app internationally and to other devices in the near future. Stuck in an asylum, she returns to Wonderland to find it terrifyingly twisted by her disturbed mind. In this interactive novel that serves as a prequel to the PC and console title of the same name, American McGee’s Alice is a short but engaging introduction to this very dark re-imagining of Wonderland. Images and music accompany text in Alice: Madness Returns for iOS, which is uncovered as you manipulate each page of the storybook. Objects you need to interact with flash occasionally, and while there are no direct instructions, you are unlikely to get stuck.
The art style is great, and the sound adds lots of atmosphere. The touchscreen controls sometime feel a little unresponsive, but Alice: Madness Returns never makes you rush. It's nice to see such a carefully created companion piece for a game.
